About the area
Hillingdon is one of London's least densely populated boroughs, largely due to the greenbelt area within the borough that covers over 800 acres of woodland. The Colne Valley, once part of the Grand Union Canal and a major trade route, is now a beautiful spot for walking, fishing, and bird watching. Ruislip Lido offers safe sandy beaches. Moreover, there are four excellent golf courses in the borough. Immortalised by Sir John Betjeman as Metro-Land, the borough has preserved many of its attractive village centres, offering its visitors a real taste of the traditional English countryside, despite being only 30 minutes’ train journey from Central London.
The borough of Hillingdon consists of many interesting districts, each with its unique lifestyle. For example, Uxbridge district and its surrounding areas have always been used as movie locations for many years. The most famous ones are the following: The Sweeney, a 1970's police drama focusing on two members of the Flying Squad – John Thaw and Dennis Waterman; The Inbetweeners is a sitcom that won the BAFTA award. It tells about teenage friends trying to deal with their school issues; Extras – a British sitcom about extras working on a film set starring Ricky Gervais.
